During the Second World War, the Flakvierling 38 was used as an anti-aircraft gun against fighter-bombers at low altitude. The original Flak 38 with one cannon was improved by the introduction of the 4x20 mm Flakvierling 38. The gun could fire at a maximum rate of 1,800 rounds per minute, and even the regular rate of 800 rounds per minute was a force to be reckoned with. Allied fighter pilots were afraid of it and called it "the demon with four barrels". It was a compact gun that could be quickly set up anywhere thanks to its trailer and was often used in the defence of airfields. They were also mounted on various vehicle platforms and served as mobile anti-aircraft guns for the defence of German airspace.
