Fokker D. II "Grünzweig`s Planes"

In 1915, the Fokker E.I, E.II and E.III monoplanes dominated the skies over the Western Front.
But their dominance did not last long, they soon became obsolete and had no chance against the new, much more powerful biplane fighters of the Allies.
The German designers were therefore forced to quickly find a suitable replacement type.
Martin Kreutzer, a Fokker designer, produced several variants of a biplane fighter designated M.17, one of which later went into production and became known as the Fokker D.II.
It was armed with a synchronised machine gun, and the first of the 181 machines produced arrived at the front in the summer of 1916 and fought until August 1917.
From the end of 1916, however, they were deployed to less exposed sections of the front or were used only to defend industrial centres against Allied bombing.

• The decal sheet is for two aircraft, both flown by Lieutenant Fritz Grünzweig, a fighter pilot who was also known as an excellent painter, caricaturist and buffoon. His aircraft were decorated with elaborate mouths and eyes on the engine cowlings, making them among the most eye-catching of all Fokker D.IIs.
