In the days before the outbreak of World War II, the British Air Ministry issued specifications calling for two types of new fighter aircraft:
One lighter, armed only with machine guns, and the other with heavier cannon armament.
The machine gun-equipped Spitfire and Hurricane were also developed to these specifications.
The requirement for the heavier type led to the construction of the twin-engine Westland Whirlwind.
The Whirlwind was used in both the fighter and ground attack roles over the English Channel.
