Shortly before the outbreak of World War II, France ordered the then newly developed DB-7 light bombers from the Douglas Company in the USA.
Some machines, powered by P&W R-1830 engines and equipped with a narrow and short tail fin, were actually delivered and used in combat in 1940.
The French machines continued to fly and fight until 1945, sometimes changing sides.
Before its defeat in 1940, France could not take delivery of all the machines it had ordered, so some of them went to Britain instead, where they were used as Havoc Mk.I.
They were followed by machines powered by the Wright R-2600 and known as Havoc Mk.II / Boston Mk.III.
The first Havoc Mk.Is flew in the light bomber role and were not equipped with a special night radar.
The night-flying Intruder aircraft were used to attack enemy airfields at night, while the radar-equipped aircraft were used to protect the night skies over Britain.
