Designed to outperform even land-based fighters, it featured a 2000 hp engine and a massive 4-metre propeller, as well as the inverted folding wings that were unique at the time.
This first version of the Corsair was nicknamed the "Birdcage" because of the large frame sections used for the canopy.
The aircraft saw front-line service from February 1943, taking part in the US military's counter-offensive in the Solomon Islands.
It was mainly used by the US Marine Corps and proved to be a valuable weapon in the arsenal of the US military thanks to its advantages over the Japanese Zero fighters.
