When the United States began its long-range strategic bombing campaign in 1944 with heavily armed B-17 and B-24 bombers, the Luftwaffe developed the special "bomber-killer" R2 variant of the Fw190 A-8.
The Focke-Wulf Fw190 was one of the Luftwaffe's best frontline fighters in World War II. Of all the different variants, the A-8 was the most widely used, armed with four 20 mm cannons and two 13 mm machine guns. A sub-variant of the A-8 was the R2, which replaced two of the 20mm cannons with more powerful 30mm cannons and added armor for its role in attacking the huge four-engined Allied bombers.
