The F-14 Tomcat is a legend of the skies that served between 1973 and 2006 and was designed for carrier-based units with powerful radar and long-range missiles.
The most produced variant was the F-14A, which itself received a number of upgrades during its production.
The late F-14As (those from the late 1980s) featured a more reliable engine design and in particular the AN/AXX-1 TCS camera pod and AN/ALQ-126 ECM antenna.
Some even had modifications to the hull that allowed the installation of the TARPS reconnaissance capsule.
From the early 1990s the aircraft was capable of carrying bombs under the fuselage; in conjunction with the AN/AAQ-25 LANTIRN pod, these were laser-guided - the F-14A had developed into a multi-role fighter. Carrier launches required a steam catapult, in which the aircraft was clamped with the nose down, swing blades forward and flaps and slats downward.
Numerous flight deck crews were involved in the takeoff, including a "shooter" who gave the start signal.
