As the situation for the German armed forces became increasingly desperate towards the end of World War II, calls for a new, cost-effective jet fighter grew louder.
This should be easy to make and fly.
In the astonishingly short period of three months from the drawing board to the prototype's first flight, Heinkel produced the small, sporty-looking He162.
The light fighter was made mostly of wood and was powered by a BMW003 turbojet engine, making it the fastest jet fighter of World War II with a top speed of 838 km/h.
Reaching the combat units at the end of March 1945, it was able to achieve some success despite the acute shortage of fuel and parts.
