In 1944, at the end of World War II, the German Army tried to improve the firepower of the German Panzerkampfwagen and the German Panzer IV/70(A) was developed based on this plan. In order to shorten the development cycle as much as possible, the Wanne was based on the German Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausf. J, which was in production at the time, combined with the fixed fighting compartment with L/70 7.5 cm long barrel gun of the IV /70( V) long. The Panzer IV/70(A) was also fitted with rigid wire mesh panels called Thoma Schürzen. A total of around 280 pieces were produced and used on both the Eastern and Western Fronts.

Tamiya has faithfully recreated the German Panzer IV/70(A).
The shape of the German Panzer IV/70(A) is accurately represented based on extensive research at the Saumur Armored Museum in France. The hull is based on the German Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausf.J (35181) kit with new wear strips on the sides, a later production tank hatch and a faithfully reproduced recoil roller support frame. Apart from the drive sprockets, idler wheels and idler pulleys, all other components are new.
