The gun could penetrate armour of up to 85mm from a distance of 1000 metres.
Although the fighting compartment was not covered, it was fitted with a 50mm thick armour plate at the front.
It was produced from 1943 onwards, and a total of about 140 were made to be used with armoured divisions.
In January 1945, 4 Type 1s were part of the 2nd Armoured Division on the Philippine island of Luzon, where they were involved in fighting with US M4 Sherman tanks.
