The Mogami, along with three cruisers of the same type - the Mikuma, the Suzuya and the Kumano - was designed and completed in 1935 as a large 8500-class light cruiser.
Protecting the Mogami was a thickened, highly bulletproof armour that could withstand extremely large drop-angle shells from heavy US cruisers.
Most impressive, however, was the 152000 hp engine that was also used on the battleship Yamato, the largest battleship ever built.
With the termination of the London Fleet Reduction Treaty in 1937, the Mogami's guns were upgraded from 15.5cm triple guns to 20cm double guns.
On 30 March 1942, the Mogami, in cooperation with the Mikuma and a squadron of destroyers, sank the US heavy cruiser Houston and the Australian cruiser Perth in the West Java region. I
n October 1944, the escorting destroyer Akebono sank the Mogami with torpedoes after she had burst into flames and been disabled by heavy damage sustained by carrier aircraft during a battle off the Philippines, sending the cruiser into the depths of the Mindanao Sea.
