Officially adopted by the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) in 1943, the Hien stood out among Japanese aircraft in the Pacific War due to its liquid-cooled Ha-40 engine, slim fuselage and long, elegant wing.
Various variants were produced, including the Ki-61-Id, which had a 20 cm longer nose to accommodate 20 mm cannons and 12.7 mm machine guns in the wing.
In fact, it was the most widely produced Hien variant, with 1360 units; Because of its superior performance at higher altitudes, it was often assigned to combat incoming U.S. B29 bombers
