However, with the outbreak of World War II, all production of the Volkswagen was immediately converted to military production.
In January 1938, the German Wehrmacht presented specifications for a military version of this practical vehicle.
In November of the same year, a prototype was completed and officially designated a passenger car. K1 “Kübelwagen” Type 82. The vehicle had a light but robust monocoque construction with a foldable tarpaulin top.
With its reliable engine and sturdy suspension, the Kübelwagen was immediately used by every unit, from the sweltering African desert to the frozen Russian Eastern Front.
By the end of the Second World War, around 51,000 Kübelwagens, including several variants, left the factory.
