It was a battle that would shape the future of Europe and the rest of the world for years to come.
The liberation of Europe by the Allies began on the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944, and lasted until the surrender of Germany on May 9, 1945.
The U.S. Army's Sherman tanks began their steady advance on the European mainland, snatching Europe piece by piece from Germany's clutches.
However, the massive tanks of the Wehrmacht, such as the Tiger and Panther, proved superior to the agile but much smaller Shermans.
One of the most important factors that enabled the Allied advance despite this difference in strength was the rapid recovery and repair of damaged tanks.
This is where the M26 tank recovery vehicles and their valiant crews came into play.
The M26 first saw action on the Italian front in 1943 and was later used extensively in the Allied advance inland after the Normandy invasion.
In all weather, in the dead of night, or under enemy fire, repair crews tirelessly performed their duty of recovering and repairing damaged tanks.
