It swept aside the Italian opponents and was respectfully referred to as the "Queen of the Desert" by the German soldiers.
During Operation Battleaxe to lift the siege of Tobruk in June 1941, the German forces famously used their 8.8cm anti-aircraft guns for anti-tank defence, as it was the only effective antidote to Matildas.
The Matilda proved its worth time and time again in many fierce battles across North Africa.
