It offered a complete performance package with the firepower of the imposing 7.5cm L/70 gun, excellent protection due to its sloping armour and manoeuvrability thanks to a 700 hp petrol engine.
Some 840 Ausf.Ds were produced between January and September 1943, and it first saw action in July of that year at the Battle of Kursk.
Although not all went smoothly, the Panther was able to take out some 140 Soviet tanks from a range of 1500 to 2000 metres, all while being impeccably protected by its sloping armour.
The D version was followed by the improved A and G versions and revolutionised German tank design.
It remained at the front until the end of hostilities.
