Development of the Bofors 40mm anti-aircraft gun for the Swedish Navy began in the 1920s.
The first test shots were fired in the early 1930s.
The USA also bought this weapon and used it in large numbers as the Automatic Gun M1.
To supply both the Army and Navy with a large number of these weapons, Chrysler built 60,000 guns and 120,000 barrels under license during the war.
