While the Panzer II was originally a universal tank, the role of the "Luchs" was more clearly defined - it was a pure reconnaissance vehicle.
The armament of the "Luchs" consisted primarily of the 20mm KwK 38 L/55, a weapon that was used in many German reconnaissance vehicles.
The "Luchs" was used mainly on the Eastern Front, and in smaller numbers on the Western Front.
The Eastern Front variant was reinforced with additional armor on the hull front.
