The Mogami class was designed in 1931 as a light cruiser of 8500 tons and five triple 15.5cm gun turrets.
The type ship of the class, the Mogami, was completed in July 1935.
She was fitted with two 20.3cm gun turrets and entered the war in 1939 and in this configuration.
She and her three sister ships formed Cruiser Division 7 of the Japanese Second Fleet and were used to support the Malaya landings.
During the Battle of the Sunda Strait in March 1942, Mogami and her sister ship Mikuma sank the heavy cruiser USS Houston and the light cruiser HMAS Perth.
After sustaining considerable damage in the Battle of Midway, her stern was substantially converted to carry reconnaissance seaplanes to improve the fleet's reconnaissance capabilities.
She took part in the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944, where she was badly damaged by US carrier aircraft and had to be sunk by friendly forces.
