In order to make it more difficult for the enemy to land on beaches, so-called beach obstacles of various types were set up. In World War II, for example, the beaches in Normandy were fortified to stop landing craft or channel them in certain directions that were under heavy fire.

The three connected angle profiles are a Czech construction from the 1930s, hence the name Czech hedgehog. They are anti-tank obstacles that was captured in large numbers during the invasion of Czechoslovakia and later rebuilt by the Germans. Using the notches on the ends of the profiles, they could also be hooked together. On soft ground such as a sandy beach, the obstacles were provided with concrete feet to prevent sinking. Czech hedgehogs found extensive use in Normandy at Omaha Beach, but were also used elsewhere. They are still used today and in a modified form.
