In order to make it more difficult for the enemy to land on beaches, so-called beach obstacles of various types were set up. In World War II, for example, the beaches in Normandy were fortified to stop landing craft or channel them in certain directions that were under heavy fire.

One type of these obstacles were the stop beams with a length of approx. 6 meters and a height of approx. 2.5 meters on the side facing the beach. This gave the beams an angle of about 30-40°, so that landing craft would run aground and not make any further progress. The beams were displayed at a lateral distance of 5 meters. Some were additionally equipped with metal saw teeth and/or mines at the end, so that the hull of the boat was torn open or blown open.
