The Jaguar 1 rocket-powered tank destroyer was converted based on the outdated rocket-powered tank destroyer 2. This concept study was already envisaged in 1964/65, but it was not until 1978-82 that 316 old rocket-powered tank destroyers 2 were actually converted. A new weapon system was installed with the HOT system, which offered various advantages and can be quickly and automatically reloaded using a drum magazine with eight missiles. Twelve additional missiles can be stored inside the vehicle.
Furthermore, the combat compartment was provided with additional armor, which stands out due to its conspicuous screw connections. In addition, tracked skirts were introduced for this rocket-powered tank destroyer.
Until the KWS in 1993-1995, the Jaguar 1 was not capable of night combat - then it was given the noticeably large observation head in the middle at the front, which contained a thermal imaging device in addition to day optics and goniometer. 157 of the vehicles received this combat upgrade.
The Jaguar 1 with thermal imaging device is 6.61m long, 3.12m wide and 2.55m high. With a deep wading shaft, it can drive through water up to 1.8m deep, has a trench crossing ability of 2m and a climbing ability of 80cm. The combat weight is 25.5t, which the 29.9l MTU engine with 500hp can accelerate to a maximum of 70km/h.
From 1996 to 2006, Jaguar 1s were in service with the Austrian Armed Forces.
