The Swedish military ordered the jet in several different versions, all of which shared a common platform.
The engine used in the airframe was the Volvo RM8, which was in fact a licensed Pratt & Whitney JT8D turbofan for commercial aircraft equipped with afterburner and thrust reverser.
This chosen engine, together with the unique concept of the delta wing, gave the airframe unique capabilities, mainly during take-off and landing on short runways.
For better handling in confined spaces of auxiliary airfields and shelters, the tail fin was designed to be foldable.
The avionics of the type were state of the art at the time. For example, the Viggen was the first combat aircraft ever to be equipped with a computer with integrated circuits.
