In the 1950s, the Swedish government decided to put the then highly modern Centurion tank into service as the new battle tank, the Strv-81.
These tanks were gradually upgraded during their service life.
Between 1983 and 1987, 80 Strv-102s (improved Strv-81s) were converted to Strr-104s.
The Strv.104s received a new power pack in addition to the REMO (renovation/modification) package.
This included night vision equipment, targeting systems, a laser rangefinder, improved gun stabilization, barrel protection covers and reactive armor. The same power pack was also fitted in the Sho't Kal Alef, consisting of a Continental AVDS-1790-2A diesel engine in conjunction with an Allison automatic transmission.
The Strv-104 can easily be distinguished from the petrol-powered Centurion versions by its raised engine deck. This modification was necessary to accommodate a larger and more efficient American diesel engine. The vehicles have a new Continental AVDS-1790-2A diesel engine coupled to an Allison CD850-6 transmission.
Additionally, of course, the striking reactive armor catches the eye.
The last Strv-104s were decommissioned in Gotland in the early 2000s.
