In the 1930s, Vickers-Amstrong developed various tracked weapon carriers for different tasks, but at the end of that decade it was decided to build just one type, which became the Universal Carrier. The driver and machine gunner sat in the front, and there was space for up to 6 soldiers to the left and right of the engine. The basic version was called the Bren Carrier because its main armament was a Bren machine gun. The MMG was equipped with a light Vickers machine gun. One version served as a anti-tank gun tractor, others had extensive radio equipment, grenade launcher equipment or flame oil tanks for a flamethrower instead of the front machine gun. The Ford V8 engine produced 85 hp and enabled speeds of up to 50 km/h. The Universal Carrier was used by British troops and their allies, but the Germans also used captured vehicles for their purposes.
