The test vehicles 1–2 were a German prototype of a turretless main battle tank.
Since the early 1970s, several West German companies had been working on concept designs for a successor to the Leopard 1.
This project was called the Kampfpanzer 3 (KPz 3).
The test program ended with the proof that with sufficient technical effort, a turretless tank with two guns could be built, but it had disadvantages in both practical and tactical use.
