The Wiesel 1 weapon carrier was delivered between 1990 and 1992 to the parachute anti-tank battalions of the airborne brigades and to the heavy companies of the mountain infantry and infantry battalions.
Initially in a quantity of 210 Wiesel 1 TOW and 133 Wiesel 1 MK with the 20mm MK 20 Rh 202 machine gun.
The vehicles are upgraded with various combat value increases during their service life.

With the decommissioning of the TOW anti-tank guided missile system and the simultaneous introduction of the Multi-Role Capable Light Guided Missile System (MELLS), the upgraded Wiesel 1 MELLS weapon carrier replaces the Wiesel 1 TOW weapon carrier.
