Bugatti 100 Racer
In the pre-war years, the famous racing car designer Ettore Bugatti took the opportunity to turn his attention to aviation and designed a concept for a racing aircraft that was to win the Deutsch de la Muerthe races, which were quite popular at the time.
At first, the plane was to be equipped with only one engine, but later this was reconsidered and two engines were used, which were arranged asymmetrically in the slender fuselage and each drove its propeller - this was two each which rotated in opposite directions.
In this form, the aircraft was even to break the world speed record. The plane was completed and prepared shortly before the outbreak of war, but had to be hidden from the eyes of the advancing German army.
Today, the Bugatti prototype is on display at the EAA Aviation Museum in the USA.
