To accomplish these tasks, the M728 is equipped with a D9 hydraulic blade, a powerful winch and an A-boom on the turret. The main armament is a 165mm short-barreled cannon M135 (Demolition Gun), which was used to destroy bunkers and fortifications.
Production started in 1965 and ended in 1987. In total (including the A1 version) 312 of these armored vehicles were produced.
The M728 saw service in Vietnam and was also used during the 1991 Gulf War and in the Balkans.
In 2000, the last US Army M728 was retired from active service and given to Army Reserve and National Guard units.
