Heinkel He 162D „Salamander“

Einloggen und Bewertung schreiben
As the situation for the German armed forces became increasingly desperate towards the end of World War II, calls were made for a new, inexpensive jet fighter.
It would be easy to build and fly.
In the astonishingly short time span of three months from the drawing board to the first flight of the prototype, Heinkel produced the small, sporty-looking He162.
The light fighter was made mostly of wood and powered by a BMW003 turbojet engine, making it the fastest jet fighter of World War II with a top speed of 838 km/h.
When it reached combat units in late March 1945, it was able to score some successes despite the acute shortage of fuel and parts.
