The D and E versions differed only very slightly in armament; the D carried only four machine guns in the wing, while the E had six.
Next to the USAAF, the second largest customer for the type was the British RAF, which urgently needed a suitable fighter.
Because of the poor altitude performance of the Allison engines, which lacked compressors, the RAF was unable to operate the type in European airspace.
Instead, they were used over Africa, and the P-40 D/E became known as the Kittyhawk Mk.I and Mk.IA respectively.
But the Kittyhawk flew not only with the RAF, but also with other Commonwealth air forces.
The RCAF used their Kittyhawk against Japanese forces over the Aleutian Islands, while the Australians used their Kittyhawk in the Pacific.
And yes, we must not forget that the Aussies also fought bravely in their P-40s over the desert sands of Africa.
