The designation varied depending on the engines used.
In the early 1930s, when fabric-covered biplanes dominated the skies, an all-metal monoplane with enclosed cockpits and engines completely hidden in the cowling suddenly appeared.
These new bomber aircraft were not only faster than other bombers of the time, they even outperformed fighter types, which in retrospect created the need for faster monoplane fighters.
The B-12 version was powered by R-1690 radial engines.
The early and late variants were distinguished by the style of air intakes on the upper cowling.
