In September 1943, it became clear that Italy had been defeated.
A squadron of Italian naval aviators also knew this and decided to fly eight IMAM/Romeo Ro.43 seaplanes from La Spezia to La Maddalena.
They took off as soon as German troops began to capture the local weapons depot.
Two of them were shot down, the remaining six reached the Spanish Balearic Islands.
The Ro.43s were interned there and later entered service with the Spanish Naval Air Force under the designation HR.7.
