She was the second vessel of the Dresden class.
Her operational area was predominantly in the waters of the Far East.
With the beginning of the First World War, she was sent to the Indian Ocean for independent trade warfare.
There she sank 23 enemy merchant ships and two warships within two months.
On 9 November 1914, she was defeated in a battle with the Australian cruiser Sydney near the Cocos Islands.
The SMS Dresden was a German cruiser in overseas waters and also the first ship of the Dresden class.

During the First World War, it sank several ships until it sank to the bottom of Cumberland Bay in March 1915 after a battle with British ships.
