It entered service with the British Army from 1971 and has been continuously improved.
Following a risk assessment, a contract was awarded in December 2010 for the development, testing and management of an improved Scimitar to provide troops in Afghanistan with a safe and reliable vehicle.
A total of 50 new vehicles were manufactured at BAE Systems in Telford early in 2012.
The Scimitar Mk II offers the crew better protection against mine explosions and has improved armour to increase resistance to explosions and ballistic threats.
To improve mine protection and create more interior space, the hull of the FV103 infantry fighting vehicle was combined with the turret and 30mm RARDEN gun of the Scimitar to create a new vehicle.
The resulting vehicles were fitted with a Cummins BTA 5.9-litre diesel engine and a David Brown TN15E+ automatic transmission.
The new, more fuel-efficient engine not only provides power for air conditioning, but also extends the vehicle's operating range, while the redesigned interior layout allows the now better-protected fuel tanks to be repositioned to reduce vulnerability to explosions and ballistic threats.
