The legendary Spitfire was the representative British fighter aircraft of the Second World War.
Many variants were built, including the Mk.VIII, a variant developed as a replacement for the RAF's previous main weapon - the Spitfire Mk.V.
The Mk.VIII was equipped with a Rolls-Royce Merlin 60 engine, larger radiators and an air filter as standard. Further improvements included fuel tanks in the wings, a retractable tailwheel, shortened ailerons and enlarged rudder and elevator.
From the second half of 1943, the Mk.VIII saw service in the Mediterranean and Pacific, serving with RAF, USAAF, RCAF and RAAF units.
