The Suzuya was built as the third light cruiser in the Mogami series.
However, the London contract lost its validity during construction and the Suzuya was rebuilt immediately after completion.
The converted Suzuya was fitted with ten 20cm twin guns, replacing the previous fifteen 15.5cm triple guns, and began her new life as a heavy cruiser.
At the outbreak of the Pacific War, the Suzuya took part in the operation to conquer the Malay Peninsula.
It also took part in the Battle of Midway along with three others of its kind - the Mogami, the Mikuma and the Kumano.
She was active in many other battles before finally meeting her fate during the naval battle off the island of Samar on October 25, 1944 after suffering severe damage from enemy attack aircraft launched from a US escort carrier.
The Suzuya was then torpedoed and sunk by a friendly destroyer.
