The T-34 was a Soviet-made medium tank. It was built from 1940 to 1958.
At the beginning of the Second World War, the invasion of industrialised Russia by the Wehrmacht threatened the supply of materials and production facilities vital to the war effort.
Russia's National Defence Committee decided to relocate tank production and associated factories.
The site became known as "Tankograd" (Tank City), a nickname chosen for this location deep in the Urals.
Faced with the urgent need to increase their tank strength, the Russians sought to simplify tank production methods.
This led to numerous versions of the T34 tank, which differed greatly from one another.
One of the most distinctive versions was produced in 1943 at the Chelyabinsk Tractor Works "ChTZ" in Tankograd. This model had a one-piece cast iron turret with pronounced curves on the edges of the turret roof and a special recess on the lower edge of the turret.
This improved turret had additional periscope and gun openings and provided more space and comfort for the crew.
A new five-speed gearbox with modified clutch was fitted, replacing the four-speed model.
Combined with the improvements to the engine, these modifications extended the time between maintenance and repair. Of the thousands of T34/76 tanks produced, only a few "ChTZ" versions were produced, so they are almost considered a rarity.
