The F4U-1A variant entered service from the summer of 1943 and featured improvements such as a half-dome canopy (to improve previously limited visibility) and the ability to carry bombs of up to 1000 pounds.
It saw frequent service in the battles with the Japanese Navy over the Solomon Islands; the Corsair saw further service in the Korean War in other variants, with the fighter-bomber capability introduced by the F4U-1A proving a highly effective addition to the aircraft's inherent capabilities.
