In order to obtain modern military aircraft, France bought a large number of US aircraft in 1939.
Among them was the V-156 Vindicator dive bomber.
The French version was designated the V-156F and differed significantly from the US aircraft - it did not have the arresting hook under the fuselage and instead received air brakes in the wings.
The V-156Fs also received French armament - machine guns and underwing racks and bombs.
Although they were tested aboard the Béarn, France only operated them from airfields.
All aircraft were eventually destroyed during the Battle of France in 1940.
