The M103 was a heavy tank with a 120mm gun that was used by the United States Army and United States Marine Corps during the Cold War.
It entered service in 1957 and served until 1974, when the concept of the heavy battle tank was considered obsolete.
After the tanks proved to be not very reliable, the M103A1 version was produced from 1959.
219 vehicles were converted.
These were given a new sight (Stereoscopic T52) and an M14 ballistic computer, a coaxial machine gun was removed and a new electric turret rotation system was installed.
The M103A2 was produced from 1964. 153 vehicles were converted from the existing tanks.
A new 750 hp diesel engine from the M60 was installed, increasing the range on the road to 480 km and the top speed to 37 km/h.
The M15 stereoscopic rangefinder has been replaced by the M24 coincidence rangefinder.
