With its highly complex P&W R-2800 engine producing 2,000 hp, a 4-meter propeller and distinctive articulated wings, the Corsair was undoubtedly an impressive aircraft and was one of the mainstays of the US Navy during World War II.
The F4U-1A variant entered service from the summer of 1943 and featured improvements such as a half-dome canopy (to improve previously limited visibility) and the ability to carry bombs of up to 1000 pounds.
She was frequently used in the battles with the Japanese Navy around the Solomon Islands; The Corsair saw further service in the Korean War, with the fighter-bomber capability introduced by the F4U-1A proving to be a highly effective complement to the aircraft's inherent capabilities.
