The original British Mk.I tank was designed to break the stalemate; the Mk.IV was a later model based on many of the same design principles, of which about 1000 were produced from March 1917.
A "Male" variant was designed to break through enemy lines and featured large 6 pounder guns in addition to machine guns, as opposed to the separate "Female" variant which was armed with machine guns only.
The Mk.IV saw a variety of engagements, including a massed deployment of some 400 vehicles at the Battle of Cambrai in November 1917, and was also victorious in the world's first tank-on-tank engagement with the German A7V in April 1918.
