The USA confiscated numerous aircraft ordered by Sweden and Great Britain for its own use.
Among these aircraft was the Caribou Mk.I (later renamed the Airacobra Mk.I) for the British, an export model of the Bell P-39 Airacobra fighter.
The Army Air Force renamed these aircraft P-400s and used them alongside their standard P-39 aircraft.
The requisitioned aircraft were also used in Africa and the Pacific theatre of operations.
Some of these aircraft were later delivered to the USSR under the Lend-Lease Act, where the British aircraft also ended up.
The P-400 differed from the US versions in that it had a 20 mm cannon in the nose and its exhaust system consisted of 12 pipes.
